Kitchen Lighting

Although probably just as important as cabinetry, appliances, and permanent fixtures, lighting is often overlooked in kitchens. Light fixtures can dictate how a person functions and feels in a space and are therefore a key feature in the room’s overall design. Below are some kitchen lighting design options to consider.

General Kitchen Lighting
The general lighting in the kitchen is necessary to simply add light to the space. Commonly, people will use ceiling lights such as recessed lighting or “can lights”. These lights come in a variety of sizes, including three, four, or five inch diameters, and can be easily replicated throughout the ceiling. New to the market, LED light bulbs are available for recessed lights which make them very energy efficient. Some light bulb companies even offer a “soft white” option to help avoid the blue glow some bulbs produce. One downside to recessed lighting is that it has a tendency to create shadows.

Task Kitchen Lighting
A fair portion of time spent in the kitchen is dedicated to preparing food. Task lighting is intended to provide direct lighting for the area or space where a person will work. Under cabinet lighting is a great solution to provide some extra light on the kitchen countertops. This is also a terrific way to eliminate some of the inherent shadows created by recessed lighting. Under cabinet lighting comes in a variety of shapes including round lights, rectangular lights, and thin rope lights. They are also available with florescent or LED bulbs.

Kitchen Island Lights
The kitchen island provides a space that houses a combination of functions. While certainly a place to prepare food, it is also an area in the kitchen where people like to gather and eat. Pendant lighting is commonly used over the island. These lights give some direct task lighting, while also provide enough light to illuminate the island area. Pendant lighting gives the homeowner a chance to show off his/her style and add some character to the room. One word of caution though, because pendant lights can take over a space, use them sparingly to avoid making the room look too cluttered.
